9-28-2013 – Virginia Motorsports Park (VMP) – Petersburg, VA

Al Generalli Racing has been chasing the 7 second barrier and set out this year determined to break records. With the help of his all-star racing team and the support of Arrington Performance they have achieved their goal.

All morning they had been in the low 8’s. 8.18. Dialing it in closer. 8.15 No nitrous. 8.12 All Turbo. At this point they could have added the spray and broken the barrier but the Al Generalli Racing team was determined to do this on boost alone after all they were far from the limits of their Twin 67mm Turbos. The track conditions were rough to say the least because they were running their 2009 HEMI Drag Pac Challenger on a test and tune day for motorcycles only. The driver’s side tire groove was perfect; sticky with a good base coat of rubber, but the passenger side tire groove was completely green. This unequal friction caused the tires to spin unevenly and the LC body car to constantly pull. Aside from the track conditions they have been fighting some torque converter issues due to the new transmission. Designing a prototype converter that could stall at the desired RPM range and couple hard enough at the top end to get to the finish line had been the last key to the puzzle. With these obstacles and the heat of the day looming over them they changed tactics. They would footbrake a pass to increase their speed at the top end and test the rev limiter. 8.28 @ 175 MPH. Now it was time to pull the boost out down low to get the tires hooking and increase the boost at the top end. Under normal track conditions launch to full boost will be set for 1.5 seconds. That Saturday crew chief Jason “Rollbar” Hensley changed the ramp to just over 4 seconds to ensure a smooth hookup and dialed the boost up to maintain the top speed they achieved in the foot braked pass. Now it was time to run. As they approached the line team owner, Al Generalli checked the battery hookup and started the datalog. With everyone thinking, “This might be it” it was. The #31 Drag pack car had done it. 7.85 @ 176 MPH. The first GEN 3 HEMI in the 7’s. World Record!

Arrington spoke with crew chief Jason "Rollbar" Hensley about the future of Al Generalli Racing and the Drag Pac Challenger. "Our plan for this car is to let it watch from the sidelines as we debut our replacement 2009 Challenger X275 car". He continued to note "this car is a history maker so for fear of tearing it up we are replacing it with the street car that the record breaking Arrington 449 HEMI power plant came from." They are not resting on this accomplishment though. They are staring down the next goal. Since this record breaking build is a numbered Drag Pac Challenger from 2009 so there was no cutting or fabrication. The intent was that this Challenger be able to easily return to its original configuration for posterity’s sake. The limits they placed on themselves with this car to stay as close as possible to the original body are gone and the next car will only be limited only by the X275 class rules and imagination. In the upcoming season they plan to retain the title of 'the world’s fastest challenger' using the 315 Drag Radials with a goal of breaking into the high 6's.
